A shooting incident in the Israeli-occupied West Bank has left four Palestinian residents and one Israeli dead.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to spark controversy by using this violence to introduce hardline measures against Palestinians, including the expansion of settlements.

According to local media and foreign reports, Israeli civilians and Palestinian residents clashed on the 24th local time in an area southwest of Nablus in the West Bank, during which a shooting occurred as Israeli soldiers and security personnel intervened.

Magen David Adom, Israel's emergency medical service, stated that the shooting resulted in the death of one Israeli, with three others injured, two of them critically.

According to the Palestinian Authority's Ministry of Health, four Palestinians were killed and four others were injured, three of them in critical condition.

Contradictory claims have emerged regarding the circumstances of the shooting.

The Israeli military stated that it dispatched troops after receiving reports that Israeli civilians hiking in the area were attacked, and that a Palestinian resident seized a civilian security guard's weapon and opened fire at Israeli civilians.

In contrast, Palestinian authorities presented an opposing claim, stating that Palestinians living in the village of Deir al-Hatab in the West Bank were attacked by Israeli civilians, and that Israeli civilians and soldiers opened fire.

Essam Saifi, a local leader of the Palestinian Fatah party in Deir al-Hatab, told Reuters, "About 25 to 30 Jewish settlers first attacked the eastern part of Deir al-Hatab and attempted to break into two houses there," adding, "When residents came out to confront them, the settlers opened fire."

He further explained, "Thirty minutes later, the Israelis returned and attacked the western part of the village, assaulting a minor with a weapon," and added, "This caused chaos, and shortly after, the Israeli army arrived and began firing alongside the settlers."

Footage released on social media shows armed Israeli settlers belonging to a settlement civil defense unit confronting dozens of Palestinian residents, while a Palestinian man is seen grappling for a settler's assault rifle amid the sound of gunfire.

Amid the conflicting claims by both sides, the Israeli military has set up checkpoints at the scene and is conducting search operations to apprehend Palestinian residents involved in the shooting.

Meanwhile, angered by the fatal shooting of the Israeli, other settlers entered the nearby village of Far'ata, throwing stones, setting fires, and opening fire at Palestinian residents.

According to the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS), seven people were injured in the violence in Far'ata.

The Israeli government rolled out hardline measures following the incident in which its citizen was killed.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz announced a new settlement construction plan and a crackdown on Palestinian residents in the West Bank after an emergency security meeting.

They plan to mobilize the Israeli military to conduct a new military operation aimed at confiscating weapons in villages suspected of being hotbeds of terrorism, and work permits within Israel for residents of those villages will be entirely revoked.

Additionally, military forces will be reinforced throughout the West Bank, and new checkpoints will be added.

Weekend leave for Israeli troops deployed to the West Bank has also been completely canceled.

Furthermore, Netanyahu added that he will accelerate the legalization process of unauthorized Jewish outposts in the West Bank and plans to build additional new settlements.

This is expected to trigger controversy as it signals an intent to push forward with settlement expansion plans under the pretext of the violence.

In the Palestinian West Bank, which Israel has occupied since the 1967 Six-Day War, violence between settlers and Palestinian residents has been persistent.

In particular, since the outbreak of the Gaza war on October 7, 2023, violence by Jewish settlers against Palestinian residents, which is illegal under international law, has surged.
