The South Korean government has delivered its rebuttal stance regarding a U.S. congressional report claiming that South Korea discriminates against American firms such as Coupang.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the South Korean Embassy in the United States delivered a detailed statement to the U.S. House Judiciary Committee to correct factual errors and explain the government's counter-position regarding the interim staff report concerning Coupang, which was released by the committee on the 1st of last month (local time).

The statement includes South Korea's legislative and enforcement principles for regulations, the non-discriminatory nature of South Korea's digital regulations, the facts surrounding Coupang's personal data leak incident, the validity of the Personal Information Protection Commission's penalties, and the legality of the government's actions against Coupang.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated, "Through this statement, the government expressed deep regret that the report was written based on unverified claims, while requesting that inaccuracies in the report be corrected and important missing facts be added."

It added, "Moving forward, our government will manage the Coupang situation to prevent it from acting as a burden on the South Korea-U.S. alliance, while continuously engaging with the U.S. political circles, including the Judiciary Committee, to actively respond to Coupang's distortion of facts."

The Judiciary Committee report is titled "Blocking Competition: South Korea's Discriminatory Attacks on American-Owned Businesses," and it unfiltered features claims by Harold Rogers, interim representative of Coupang in South Korea, that South Korea is attempting to siphon Coupang customers away and drive them toward domestic competitors.
