One of the victims who suffered severe injuries and had been receiving treatment following an arson attack at an apartment management office in Gyeongsan, North Gyeongsang Province, has passed away.
Police have upgraded the charges against the suspect, a 71-year-old man surnamed Yoo, from arson resulting in injury to a building in use to arson resulting in injury or death, while investigating the exact cause of death and its causal relationship with the crime.
According to the North Gyeongsang Provincial Police Agency today (July 24), a woman in her 50s, identified as A, was pronounced dead at 11:10 a.m. today while receiving treatment at a hospital.
Police plan to determine the exact cause of death through an examination and autopsy of victim A.
Following the death of victim A, police upgraded the charges against suspect Yoo from arson resulting in injury to a building in use to arson resulting in injury or death.
Immediately after the incident, victim A was treated at a burn specialty hospital in Daegu, but her condition worsened, prompting her transfer to Seoul to continue treatment.
She reportedly fell victim to the attack after visiting the management office on the day of the incident to check on a malfunctioning CCTV camera.
As the suspect is currently receiving treatment for full-body burns and has not yet been questioned face-to-face, police plan to monitor his medical progress before executing an arrest warrant to investigate his motive and whether the crime was premeditated.
