Recently, a video showing people unlawfully picking up lucky coins thrown into Cheonggyecheon Stream sparked controversy. Did this actually lead to official complaints?

Yes, a complaint was recently filed with the Seoul Facilities Corporation, urging them to put a stop to the unauthorized collection of lucky coins.

The complainant requested stronger notices stating that because the lucky coins are assets belonging to the Seoul Metropolitan Government, taking them without permission could be subject to punishment.

The complainant also suggested installing foreign-language warning signs and instructional videos so that foreign tourists can easily understand the rules.

Previously, a controversy arose after a video was released showing a woman holding a parasol starting to pick up coins from the bottom of the Palseokdam pool in Cheonggyecheon, prompting nearby men and students to join in and gather the coins.

In response, the Seoul Facilities Corporation stated that safety personnel are currently patrolling the site to intensively monitor unauthorized collection activities, and are taking action such as immediately reporting violators to the police when caught.

The corporation also explained that it will pursue additional measures, including expanding CCTV guidance and cooperation with the police.

The lucky coins in Cheonggyecheon are collected every week, with domestic coins donated to the Seoul Scholarship Foundation and foreign coins donated to UNICEF.

As the small wishes of citizens lead to sharing and support for neighbors in need, a mature sense of civic consciousness is also needed to protect them.
