The prosecution has demanded a six-year prison sentence for a man in his 50s who attacked an upstairs neighbor with a weapon over noise disputes between floors.

During the sentencing hearing held yesterday by Criminal Division 2 of the Jeju District Court (presiding judge Seo Beom-wook) for the man in his 50s, identified as Mr. A, who was indicted on charges including attempted murder, the Jeju District Prosecutors Office asked the court to sentence him to six years in prison and order the attachment of an electronic tracking device and probation.

Mr. A was brought to trial for visiting an upstairs neighbor at a multi-family housing unit in Jeju on the evening of March 24 while intoxicated, threatening to kill them, and swinging a weapon.

It was reported that Mr. A had suffered extreme stress due to noise issues between floors, such as the barking of a companion dog raised in the upstairs apartment.

During previous hearings, Mr. A admitted to the facts of the case but denied any intent to kill.

Mr. A's defense counsel stated, "The defendant only intended to threaten the victim, who had a larger build than him, and had no intention to kill. He committed the crime under the influence of alcohol after suffering from inter-floor noise for a long time. We ask the court to consider that he has received regular counseling for depression and that this was an impulsive crime."

Mr. A also said, "My heart aches for causing severe trauma to the victim. I bow my head and apologize."

The sentencing hearing is scheduled for September 10.
