At barbecue restaurants, it is common to see cylindrical storage chairs, often called "drum chairs," where diners can store their clothes or bags.

A university hospital plastic surgery professor has issued a warning, pointing out that finger amputation accidents involving these chairs are happening repeatedly.

Professor Lee Ho-hyung of Hanyang University Hospital posted a photo of a cylindrical storage chair on social media, writing, "I am introducing a piece of furniture that quietly requires our awareness."

Professor Lee stated, "Strictly speaking, it is not furniture, but from the perspective of someone who performs replantation surgery on trauma and amputation patients, this chair is quite frightening," adding, "I have seen as many as five patients who suffered finger amputations after getting their fingers caught in the chair while sitting down."


The accidents reportedly occur mainly when moving the chair or sitting down.

If someone inadvertently puts their body weight into sitting down while their finger is caught in the gap between the chair lid and the main body, the finger can be severely pinched, leading to an accident.

For this reason, it is advisable to develop the habit of keeping hands away from the gaps or lid boundaries of the chair when sitting.

When pulling or turning the chair, people should also place their hands on the top surface of the chair to move it.
