Anyone who has served in the military likely has vivid memories of taking night watch turns.

However, reports indicate that soldiers at military bases equipped with systems like CCTV may no longer have to stand night guard duty.

The Ministry of National Defense has issued an administrative notice for a partial amendment to the "Unit Management Directive" containing these measures.

The amendment states that if the purpose of night watch can be achieved through alternative verification systems such as patrol and CCTV designated for guard operations or unit management, a commander at the battalion level or higher can decide whether to operate night watches.

The current directive stipulates that night watch is typically organized in pairs, patrolling living quarters and other areas from evening roll call until wake-up the next day.

The main purpose of night watch duty has been to verify the number of sleeping personnel to enable immediate response in the event of situations such as casualties or desertion.

However, the military explains that the necessity of night watch duty has significantly decreased due to the modernization of living facilities for service members, including the installation of CCTV.

Observations suggest that this directive amendment could eliminate a substantial portion of night watch duties.
