A heavy prison sentence has been handed down to a man in his 20s who attempted to murder schoolmate siblings and set fire to the victims' home.

Jeju District Court Criminal Division 2 (Presiding Judge Seo Beom-wook) sentenced 21-year-old A, who was indicted and detained on charges including violation of the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment, etc. of Sexual Crimes (rape resulting in murder, etc.), attempted murder, and arson of inhabited structures, to 35 years in prison yesterday (July 22).

The court also ordered the disclosure and notification of personal information for 10 years, the attachment of a location-tracking electronic device for 20 years, and a 10-year employment restriction at institutions related to children, adolescents, and persons with disabilities.

According to the prosecution's indictment, A is accused of visiting the home of B, a former schoolmate, in the early morning hours of January 7, swinging a blunt weapon he had prepared in an attempted murder of B, which failed.

A is also charged with threatening B's younger sister with a weapon, forcibly sexually assaulting her, and attempting to murder her.

Not stopping there, A set fire to the jumper he was wearing using a gas stove, burning a portion of the house.

Although A previously acknowledged the facts of the indictment while claiming mental and physical weakness, the court rejected the claim, stating, "A psychological evaluation showed no specific mental illness."

The court stated, "The nature of the crime is grave, as it was a brutal offense committed without any particular reason and carried out with premeditation. The victims require long-term treatment and are suffering from severe trauma."

The court added, "We determined that it is necessary to isolate the defendant from society for a considerable period to prevent further innocent victims."
