The 2nd Criminal Division of the Daegu High Court (Presiding Judge Won Ho-shin) dismissed the appeals filed by both the prosecution and the defendant, A, a 43-year-old Vietnamese national indicted on charges including murder for killing his girlfriend on the 22nd.
Previously, the court of first instance sentenced A to 14 years in prison.
A was put on trial for charges that included flying into a rage while arguing with his girlfriend at his home in Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province, in December of last year, and stabbing her multiple times with a weapon, resulting in her death.
Investigations revealed that he became enraged upon learning that the victim was also seeing another man, sent that man a photo of the victim wearing only underwear, and then brutally stabbed her multiple times when she confronted him about it.
The court stated, "He fundamentally infringed upon human life, inflicting irreversible damage," adding, "He has not made efforts to restore the damage, nor has he been forgiven by the bereaved family."
The court further noted, "The sentencing factors argued by the defendant and the prosecution in their appeals are largely similar and appear to have been fully considered when determining the sentence in the original trial."
