An endangered sea turtle, tightly tangled and unable to move in a large abandoned fishing net, has been rescued with the help of the Coast Guard.

At 2:11 PM yesterday (July 22), a report was filed with the Coast Guard stating that a sea turtle was trapped in a discarded net and unable to move off the waters near Yongsu Port, Hangyeong-myeon, Jeju City.

A Jeju Coast Guard officer equipped with snorkeling gear removed the nets wrapped around the sea turtle's body in the water for about 10 minutes. The turtle then swam away without any apparent injuries.

The turtle was estimated to be a loggerhead sea turtle.

The Coast Guard brought ashore about 70 kg of abandoned nets collected at the scene, which will be disposed of through the local government.

This marks the second sea turtle rescued this year, following an incident on the 18th when another sea turtle unable to move after being tangled in a discarded net near the rocky shore of Saeyeongyo Bridge in Seogwipo was rescued by the Coast Guard.

The annual number of sea turtles rescued from abandoned nets stands at 2 last year, 1 in 2024, and 2 in 2023.
