A man in his 40s who went missing after being swept away by swift currents in the Jucheongang River in Yeongwol, Gangwon Province, amid torrential downpours in the region, has been found dead five days after the search began.

According to police and fire authorities today (July 22), a body was discovered at 10:31 a.m. in the bushes near Hwashinkyo Bridge in Sincheon-ri, Hanbando-myeon, Yeongwol-gun, about 3.7 kilometers away from the spot where he went missing.

Police confirmed through identity verification that the body belonged to Mr. A, a man in his 40s who went missing in the Jucheongang River five days ago.

Previously, on July 18 at 7:59 p.m. when heavy rain was lashing the Gangwon region, Mr. A was swept away by a rapid current while crossing a weir to go fishing in the Jucheongang River in Yongseok-ri, Jucheon-myeon, Yeongwol-gun.

At the time, two companions who had come fishing with Mr. A witnessed the incident and reported it to 119, prompting a five-day search operation that lasted through today.

Police plan to investigate the exact circumstances of the accident.
