The crocodile recently captured in Soyang Stream in Chang-dong, Yeoju, Gyeonggi Province, has been identified as a Siamese crocodile, an internationally endangered species.

According to Yeoju City on Tuesday (July 21), the city received these results after requesting a species analysis from the National Institute of Biological Resources.

It is reported that the National Institute of Biological Resources conducted the analysis based on videos and photos of the crocodile provided by Yeoju City.

Because there are very few breeding individuals left, the Siamese crocodile is listed as a Class I endangered species under CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora).

Previously, fire authorities were dispatched on July 18 at 11:27 a.m. after receiving a report from a passerby stating, "There is something that looks like a pet crocodile," and captured the 50-centimeter-long crocodile within about 30 minutes.

The environmental department of Yeoju City took custody of the crocodile from the fire authorities and is currently providing temporary care at an animal protection center operated by the city through a private contractor.

Yeoju City had planned to post a notice regarding the abandoned animal on the protection center's website to find its owner and wait for the 10-day notice period. However, it is reported that the city is now deliberating on how to handle the crocodile following its identification as a Siamese crocodile.

Under current law, individuals who trade or possess internationally endangered species like the Siamese crocodile may be subject to punishment.
