The police have cleared independent lawmaker Kang Sun-woo of allegations that she received split political donations in exchange for a position as the head of a local facilities management corporation from a former Seoul city council member.
The Public Crime Investigation Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency recently concluded that there was no evidence of wrongdoing regarding lawmaker Kang and a former Seoul city council member, surnamed Kim, who were under investigation for violating the Political Funds Act. The case has been closed without referral to the prosecution.
In the investigation result notification, the police reportedly stated, "Considering the timing of Kim's appointment as the head of the facilities management corporation, it is difficult to conclude that lawmaker Kang received the donations in exchange for securing the position, anticipating her re-election as a National Assembly member for the same district."
Previously, lawmaker Kang had been reported to the authorities over suspicions that she received donations from Kim in exchange for the position of head of the Gangseo-gu Facilities Management Corporation.
It is known that Kim donated 5 million won to lawmaker Kang on three separate occasions in 2022.
