American golfer Bryson DeChambeau, who competed in the major championship The Open, reportedly threatened to call U.S. President Donald Trump to resolve a controversy regarding a rules violation.

During the second round of The Open held at Royal Birkdale Golf Club in the United Kingdom last week, DeChambeau was assessed a two-stroke penalty after tournament officials ruled that he had improved his backswing area by pressing down long grass.

AFP reported that "DeChambeau strongly protested the ruling to the officials, and in the process, reportedly hinted that he would call President Trump."

DeChambeau, who won the major U.S. Open in 2020 and 2024, frequently plays golf with Trump and maintains a close relationship with him. He also serves as a member of the President's Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition.

It has not been confirmed whether DeChambeau actually called Trump to resolve the issue.

The R&A, which organizes The Open, told BBC Sport that "they have not received a call from President Trump, and that decisions are the same regardless of which player is affected."

DeChambeau finished The Open in a tie for 14th place and left the venue without speaking to the media.
