The monsoon front that brought heavy rain over the past weekend is currently hovering over the central region. As this front shifts back and forth, monsoon rain is expected to fall across the country throughout this week. Today, July 21, up to 150mm of heavy rain is forecast for northern Gyeonggi Province and northern Gangwon Province.

This is a village in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, where heavy downpours over the weekend caused water to flood into homes.
Soaked mattresses, cushions, desks, and various other household items have been rendered unusable.
Residents are installing water pumps in anticipation of more heavy rain overnight, but their anxiety remains.
[Resident affected by flooding in Beolmal Village, Goyang: I wish it would end like this, but I am worried because the forecast says it will keep raining throughout this week.]
Satellite imagery confirms a long, diagonal monsoon front developing where the North Pacific High from the south meets cold air from the northwest. The front is positioned over the Seoul metropolitan area and Gangwon Province, and it is expected to bring heavy rain to the central region today.
Forecasts predict 30 to 100mm of rain for the Seoul metropolitan area and Gangwon Province, 30 to 80mm for the Chungcheong region, and 5 to 60mm for the Honam and Yeongnam regions.
[Noh Yu-jin / Forecaster, Korea Meteorological Administration: Areas in northern Gyeonggi and northern Gangwon, where the cloud bands are most compressed, may see heavy rain of 150mm or more.]
Just last week, the North Pacific High expanded as far north as North Korea, but it was pushed back south due to water vapor left behind by a typhoon, leading to a cycle of heavy rain and heatwaves.
However, this week, the North Pacific High is expected to shift back and forth around the southern coast and the Yeongnam region, causing rain to continue across the entire country along the edge of the high-pressure system.
