It then narrowed its losses during the morning to reach as high as 6,814.86, but soon expanded its decline again.
At one point during the session, it slid to 6,472.80, briefly dipping below the 6,500 mark.
The KOSDAQ index also closed at 749.64, down 42.20 points or 5.33% from the previous session.
As the sharp decline continued, a sell-side circuit breaker was triggered in both the KOSPI and KOSDAQ markets today.
