The police special investigation team looking into allegations of procedural misconduct regarding the investigation of Jang Yoon-gi, the perpetrator of the Gwangju high school girl murder case, has been confirmed to be conducting a direct interrogation of the suspect.
According to SBS reporting, the special investigation team plans to send investigators to the correctional facility today, July 20, to conduct an in-person interview with Jang.
This marks the first time the special investigation team has met with and questioned Jang directly since the allegations of investigative misconduct were raised following SBS reports.
It is understood that the special investigation team intends to focus on determining whether Jang received any special treatment or favors from the investigation team at the Gwangju Gwangsan Police Station during the initial phase of the investigation.
Jang’s uncle, surnamed Jang, who is a serving police officer, is also scheduled to be questioned by police today as a witness.
The special investigation team is expected to press the elder Jang on whether he intervened in the investigation of his nephew.
With the warrant validity hearing for the former head of the detective division at the Gwangju Gwangsan Police Station, Superintendent Park, scheduled for tomorrow, July 21, which is considered a turning point in this investigation, the special investigation team plans to accelerate its comprehensive probe by focusing on summoning relevant individuals and analyzing seized evidence.
