Director Na Hong-jin's film 'Hope' surpassed 1 million viewers on July 17, its third day of release.
Distributor Plus M Entertainment announced that the film reached the 1 million viewer milestone this afternoon.
This is one day faster than director Yeon Sang-ho's zombie film 'Colony,' which hit the 1 million mark on its fourth day, marking the fastest record among films released this year.
'Hope,' which was released on July 15, tells the story of what happens when an unknown extraterrestrial life form arrives in Hopohang, a fictional village near the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).
It is director Na's first science fiction film in 10 years since 'The Wailing' (2016). The movie garnered high expectations even before its release, featuring a cast that includes Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung, and Jung Ho-yeon, as well as Hollywood actors such as Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, and Taylor Russell.
The film is receiving mixed reviews, recording an 81% rating on the CGV Egg Index, which is based on evaluations from actual moviegoers.
While it has been highly praised for its suspense and action direction, some critics have pointed out shortcomings in its narrative.
