A fire at an orphanage on the outskirts of Algiers, the capital of the North African nation of Algeria, has left at least 11 people dead and 19 others injured.

According to reports from AFP, Reuters, and other news agencies, the Algerian Civil Protection agency, which oversees firefighting efforts, stated that the blaze broke out at a state-run orphanage in the Mohammadia district of Algiers in the early hours of July 16, local time. Authorities are currently working to extinguish the fire, and the preliminary casualty count stands at at least 11 deaths and 19 injuries.

The specific identities of the victims and the cause of the fire have not yet been determined.

Algeria has been experiencing a recent heat wave, with approximately 900 fires reported over the past week, reportedly straining the resources of fire and rescue authorities.
