A man in his 60s has been sentenced to five years in prison for assaulting his 90-year-old mother, leading to her death.

On Wednesday (July 15), the Busan District Court Criminal Division 5 (Presiding Judge Kim Hyun-soon) sentenced the man, identified as A, to five years in prison on charges of injury resulting in death of a lineal ascendant.

A was indicted on charges of beating his 90-year-old mother multiple times on her side, shoulders, arms, and thighs at their apartment in Busan on January 9, causing her death.

According to the investigation, A became enraged when his elderly mother failed to follow his instructions to get up so he could clean up after she had a bowel movement in the master bedroom.

A had been living with his mother since 2016 to provide care for her.

The victim passed away five days after the assault.

A left his mother's body unattended and did not report the incident to 119 until four days after her death.

Prosecutors had previously requested a 14-year prison sentence for A.

The court stated, "Although the defendant claims he only lightly struck his mother, the autopsy results confirm that she died due to the assault," adding, "While the act is highly condemnable, we have taken into account that the crime appears to have been committed impulsively."
