The special investigation team under the National Office of Investigation announced the interim results of its probe into the truth behind the Jang Yoon-gi case today (July 15).
The special team stated that it has referred Police Inspector A, the team leader who handled the Jang Yoon-gi case, to the prosecution under arrest on charges of destruction of evidence, abuse of power, and dereliction of duty.
Inspector A is accused of failing to secure key evidence—such as cable ties and a sex doll, which indicated premeditated sexual assault—or instructing subordinates not to secure them during the investigation of the Jang Yoon-gi case.
Jang Yoon-gi admitted to the intent of rape and murder during his second trial held on the 13th.
It was also revealed that Inspector A ordered a team member to delete footage of the cable ties captured during the search and seizure of Jang Yoon-gi's vehicle and instructed that details regarding Jang's stalking activities be omitted from the investigation report.
The special investigation team expressed deep apologies, stating that the investigator, who should have uncovered the objective truth of the case, instead concealed evidence, causing indelible pain to the victim and the bereaved family.
The special team has also booked and is investigating the head of the detective division at the Gwangsan Police Station and the chief of the police station on charges of abuse of power.
Just before the police announced these interim findings at the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency, the prosecution launched a raid on four locations, including the offices of the Gwangju Police Commissioner and the head of the investigation department, in connection with allegations of a botched investigation.
Furthermore, regarding the special investigation team's statement that it had captured evidence suggesting Jang Yoon-gi knew the victim, a high school girl, prior to the incident, the prosecution explained that it plans to verify the facts, noting that Jang has consistently claimed they were complete strangers.
