The Blue House stated that the temporary return of Ambassador to the U.S. Kang Kyung-wha is intended to hear the ambassador's suggestions and candid opinions on ways to develop bilateral relations.
A Blue House official explained in response to related inquiries today (July 15) that the temporary returns of ambassadors stationed in other countries have also been conducted in this context.
The official added, "Ambassador Kang is scheduled to report to the Foreign Minister and hold working-level consultations with officials from the Blue House and relevant ministries."
Previously, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also stated at a regular briefing yesterday (July 14) that "the Foreign Minister has frequently taken opportunities to communicate directly with ambassadors stationed in relevant countries to hear firsthand assessments regarding bilateral relations."
Ambassador to China Roh Jae-heon also returned temporarily last month, at a time when major issues such as a North Korea-China summit had emerged.
Because of this, interpretations have emerged that Ambassador Kang's return may also be due to major South Korea-U.S. issues, such as the Coupang situation, investments in the U.S., or the "warship construction" mentioned by President Donald Trump.
Ambassador Kang is scheduled to hold working-level consultations with key Blue House officials, including National Security Office Director Wi Sung-lac, tomorrow (July 16).
