The film "Wild Sing" will meet global audiences through Netflix starting July 31.
"Wild Sing" is a comedy film about "Triangle," a three-member mixed dance group that once swept the music scene but disbanded overnight after getting caught up in an unexpected incident, as they make a reckless challenge to seize a chance for a comeback 20 years later.
Released on June 3, the film has drawn 1.33 million viewers nationwide to date. Although it did not reach the break-even point (2 million viewers), the film's buzz was high. In particular, the character Choi Seong-gon (Oh Jung-se) and the song "I Like You" that he sang created various "memes" on the internet and in communities, gaining even more popularity than the film itself.
However, compared to the film's viral success, "Wild Sing" had a low number of viewers. Conversely, the characters and the song in the film created a strange phenomenon of gathering intense buzz. This means that many viewers have not seen the film. As it moves to Netflix with the end of its theatrical run, it will be able to meet a wider audience. As it is a secondary release through a subscription service, it is expected to receive more choices.
Ahead of the Netflix release, the investor and distributor Lotte Entertainment expressed their expectations, saying, "We intend to expand the intense heat gained in domestic theaters to the global market through Netflix. It will be a great opportunity for Korean comedy films to build a global fandom beyond cultural barriers."
