Jahmai Jones (28), a Korean-American outfielder who played as a key hitter for the South Korean national team in the 2026 World Baseball Classic (WBC), has transferred to the Boston Red Sox.

The Boston Red Sox of Major League Baseball (MLB) announced on the 15th (KST) that they have acquired Jones from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for a player to be named later (PTBNL).

Previously, Detroit had designated Jones for assignment (DFA) and called up catcher Eduardo Valencia.

Detroit reached a trade agreement with Boston, which had been seeking a right-handed hitting outfielder during the DFA period, giving Jones the opportunity to continue his big league career with a new team.

According to MLB.com, Boston hopes that Jones's power hitting will be revived at Fenway Park, their hitter-friendly home stadium.

Jones is highly likely to be utilized as a platoon player when facing left-handed starting pitchers.

Jones, whose mother is Korean, has recorded a batting average of .137 (13 hits in 95 at-bats), 2 home runs, 7 runs, 7 RBIs, and an OPS (on-base plus slugging) of .440 in 57 games this season.

In the 2026 WBC, he posted a batting average of .238 (5 hits in 21 at-bats) with 1 home run, 3 runs, 2 RBIs, and an OPS of .702.
