Bicycles are seen toppled over near a bicycle storage area, with vehicle debris scattered across the scene.
The accident occurred around 6:50 a.m. today when a car driven by a woman in her 50s, identified as A, drove onto the sidewalk near Jeongja Station on the Suin-Bundang Line in Bundang-gu, Seongnam.
It is reported that the car first struck the rear of a village bus that was driving ahead before veering onto the sidewalk.
A man in his 30s who was walking on the sidewalk was struck by the vehicle and transported to a hospital in cardiac arrest, where he was later pronounced dead.
The driver, A, and a teenage passenger were also injured and are receiving treatment at a hospital; their injuries are not considered life-threatening.
Police investigation results indicate that the driver was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
It is reported that A claimed to the police that the vehicle had experienced sudden unintended acceleration.
Police believe the accident occurred as A’s vehicle, which was traveling in the outermost lane, struck the rear of a village bus stopped at a bus station, and the impact caused the car to swerve onto the sidewalk on the right.
The police have booked A on charges of causing death under the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Settlement of Traffic Accidents and plan to investigate the exact circumstances of the accident once she finishes her medical treatment.
