KOSPI Closes 0.7% Higher After Volatile Trading Session

The KOSPI closed slightly higher today after experiencing extreme volatility throughout the trading session.

On Tuesday (July 14), the KOSPI finished at 6,856.83, up 49.90 points or 0.7 percent.

The index opened at 6,769.06, down 0.56 percent, and fluctuated significantly throughout the day, at one point falling as low as 6,448.86.

The intraday volatility reached 531 points today.

Individual investors net sold 4.1242 trillion won, while institutions and foreigners net bought 3.2158 trillion won and 969.4 billion won, respectively. Unlike the previous day, their increased net buying contributed to the rise in the index.

SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics, which plummeted 15 percent and 10 percent respectively the previous day, saw sharp fluctuations but managed to recover some of their losses by the end of the session.

Samsung Electronics closed at 263,000 won, up 3.34 percent from the previous trading day, and SK Hynix closed at 1,913,000 won, up 3.69 percent.

The KOSDAQ index closed at 783.98, down 15.38 points from the previous trading day.

The index fell by more than 6 percent at one point, triggering a sidecar for selling at 12:06 PM.

In the Seoul foreign exchange market, the won-dollar exchange rate closed at 1,493.0 won, down 10.4 won from the previous trading day.
