The National Office of Investigation's special investigation team, which is looking into allegations of a botched investigation into the Jang Yoon-gi case, has booked additional members of the former investigative leadership.
The special investigation team under the National Office of Investigation booked a former Gwangsan Police Station Chief, identified as Superintendent General A, and a former head of the detective division, identified as Superintendent B, on charges of abuse of power on Tuesday (July 14).
They are suspected of exerting undue influence against the will of the investigation team members during the probe into the Jang Yoon-gi case.
The same charges have also been added against the former investigation team leader, who was previously arrested on charges including destruction of evidence.
The special investigation team is focusing on why key evidence, such as a cable tie, was not secured, the circumstances surrounding phone calls between the investigation team and Jang Yoon-gi's father at the time, and whether there was any improper direction from superiors during the investigation.
The fact that the charge of murder was applied instead of the more serious charge of rape and murder is also under investigation.
On Monday (July 13), the special investigation team summoned and questioned seven individuals, including the former investigation team leader, team members, and officials from the Women and Youth Affairs Division of the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency and the Gwangsan Police Station.
