Today (July 14), the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family reported a recommendation to the Cabinet meeting to lower this age threshold to under 13, specifically for cases involving violent, serious, or repeat offenses. As the basis for this proposal, the Ministry cited the results of a public deliberation process involving 212 citizens. The results showed that support for conditionally lowering the age threshold rose slightly from 45.8% before the deliberation to 46.7% afterward. When asked what the new age should be, the most common response was to lower it by one year to under 13, at 5.8%. After receiving the report, President Lee Jae-myung stated that while the age threshold should indeed be lowered, a final decision should not be made today, suggesting further collection of public opinion and additional polling.
