▲ Police officers stopping the taxi
Police officers who grew suspicious of a taxi speeding with its hazard lights on during rush hour discovered an unconscious toddler inside and helped transport the child to a hospital, saving a precious life.
According to the Gangwon Provincial Police Agency on July 13, Sergeant Park and Constable Jeon of the Toseong Police Substation under the Goseong Police Station were on patrol on May 28 at 7:31 p.m. when they spotted a taxi driving faster than other vehicles with its hazard lights flashing.
Sensing something was wrong, the officers pulled the taxi over. The taxi driver requested help, saying, "The child is very ill and needs to be taken to the hospital quickly."
A guardian and a 2-year-old toddler were in the back seat.
The child had been suffering from high fever and vomiting since the previous day, and the condition had deteriorated rapidly after leaving daycare.
At the time, the toddler was in a critical state, losing consciousness and showing signs of cyanosis.
The guardian had taken a taxi to reach the hospital as quickly as possible but was struggling to get through traffic during the evening rush hour.
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the officers immediately moved the guardian and the toddler into their patrol car and rushed to a nearby hospital with sirens blaring.
Due to the rush hour traffic, the trip from Munam Bridge in Jugwang-myeon, Goseong-gun, to Sokcho Medical Center was expected to take about 30 minutes, but the police's swift response allowed them to arrive in about 10 minutes.
The toddler received immediate emergency treatment, recovered, and was confirmed to have been discharged safely that same day.
This rescue is being cited as an example of how the officers' keen observation and quick judgment, which did not overlook a small sign of distress, led to saving a life.
The police plan to recommend the two officers for commendations in recognition of their efforts.
Footage of the rescue can be viewed on the Gangwon Provincial Police Agency's social media channels and YouTube.
