People Power Party Representative Jang Dong-hyeok is intensifying his criticism of the Democratic Party's push to completely abolish the prosecution's supplementary investigation powers.
During the Supreme Council meeting on the morning of July 13, Representative Jang claimed, "The only people who benefit from the dismantling of the prosecution are President Lee Jae-myung and the Democratic Party."
Regarding the Democratic Party's judicial reform, Representative Jang pointed out, "If the absolute power previously held by the prosecution is transferred to the police, who already possess significant power, a 'police monster' will eventually be created," adding, "The police will inevitably become corrupt."
He continued, "We can see this just by looking at the recent Jang Yoon-gi case," and explained, "In this case, there was a disgraceful 'my-family cartel' where the suspect's father destroyed evidence, leaked investigation information, and downplayed the case simply because they were 'one of our own.'"
Representative Jang argued that the prosecution's supplementary investigation power also serves as a check on the police.
He added, "(If the prosecution's supplementary investigation power is abolished), the police will become mere servants of power, ignoring the lives and safety of the citizens."
Representative Jang also claimed, "Even the legal community within the progressive camp is concerned," and asserted, "They are pushing this through, claiming that only President Lee Jae-myung and the Democratic Party see no issues with it."
He emphasized, "Ultimately, the damage will be borne by the public," adding, "The People Power Party will ensure that we protect a judicial system that provides practical checks and balances to prevent police power from reigning over the people, and that protects citizens who have been treated unfairly."
