Cho Kuk, former leader of the Rebuilding Korea Party, stated today (July 12) regarding his social media post on "how to distinguish between Busan dialect and Ilbe (a far-right online community) expressions," saying, "I am very regretful and sorry that my post was used as an opportunity to hurt RESCENE and their fans."
On Facebook, the former leader stated, "I have never mentioned or targeted RESCENE in any of my posts. I have never said that RESCENE is associated with Ilbe," and made the aforementioned remarks.
Previously, on July 5, Cho posted on Facebook about how to distinguish between the suffix "no" used in the Gyeongsang-do dialect and the suffix "no" used by Ilbe users to mock the late former President Roh Moo-hyun. In the post, he argued that the mechanical use of "no" in questions constitutes hate speech.
This sparked controversy as some interpreted it as a jab at RESCENE member Woni, who used the phrase "museop-no" (meaning "it's scary") in a video on her YouTube channel.
Regarding the background of his post at the time, the former leader said, "I intended to point out how deeply Ilbe culture has permeated our society's linguistic life and to raise awareness of its dangers," adding, "What I lamented was the phenomenon where the Ilbe-style use of 'no,' which began with mocking the late former President Roh Moo-hyun, is spreading throughout our society without any criticism and is being condoned."
He continued, "I will continue to fight against the anti-human rights and anti-humanitarian Ilbe culture," while adding, "At the same time, I will strive to better understand the language and culture of the future generation with a humble heart."
Cho concluded his post by saying, "I send a big round of applause for RESCENE's struggles and achievements, and I sincerely cheer for them to receive even more love on bigger stages in the future," and added, "I will shout the slogan I learned through this incident. RESCENE, Yaho!"
