▲ Typhoon Bavi hits Zhejiang Province, China
Approximately 2 million people have been evacuated across various regions in China due to the landfall of the 9th typhoon of the season, Bavi, and accompanying heavy rainfall.
In Taiwan, which was also within the typhoon's path, more than 100 people have been reported injured.
Chinese state media reported that Typhoon Bavi first made landfall in Yuhuan City, Zhejiang Province, at approximately 11:20 p.m. yesterday (July 11), with maximum wind speeds reaching 144 km/h.
The typhoon briefly moved off the coast before making a second landfall in Yueqing City, Zhejiang Province, about 20 minutes later.
As heavy rains lashed coastal areas, raising concerns over flooding, transportation disruptions, overflowing rivers, and submerged farmland, authorities in Zhejiang Province announced that they had evacuated approximately 1.72 million people.
In China's capital, Beijing, more than 100,000 residents were evacuated due to heavy rain, while 130,000 people were evacuated in Fujian Province and approximately 34,000 in coastal areas of Shanghai.
Damage was also reported in Taiwan, which fell under the influence of Bavi.
Taiwan's Central Emergency Operation Center stated that as of 7:00 p.m. the previous day, 113 people, including five foreign nationals, had been injured due to the typhoon.
Across Taiwan, 14,000 people were evacuated, hundreds of flights were canceled, and more than 170,000 households suffered power outages.
The Central Weather Administration of Taiwan warned that as the typhoon passed by the northern part of the island, it would bring heavy rain and potentially dangerous waves reaching up to 10 meters along the coast.
While Typhoon Bavi is expected to gradually weaken as it moves northwest, heavy rain is forecast to continue in some parts of China until July 15.
