The Democratic Party of Korea stated today (July 11) regarding the allegations of collusion between the investigation team and the father of Jang Yoon-gi, a high-ranking police officer and the murderer of a high school girl in Gwangju, that "if the public power that should be chasing the criminal has instead acted as a shield for the criminal, it is not a poor investigation, but an act of complicity under the guise of an investigation."

Spokesperson Park Kyung-mee said in a written briefing on this day, "We strongly demand a full-scale re-investigation mobilizing all investigative capabilities. A re-investigation without sanctuary is the only answer."

She added, "Everyone who participated in the destruction and omission of evidence must be placed back on the investigation line," and "The substantive truth hidden behind the massive veil of concealment must be uncovered without a single doubt."

She continued, "As public outrage boiled over, the police presented organizational reform plans such as a reform task force and the establishment of an internal corruption investigation unit," and emphasized, "What the public demands is not a superficial measure to avoid criticism, but fundamental reform that entails the pain of cutting out one's own flesh."

She further added, "The Democratic Party will watch until the end to ensure that the re-investigation process proceeds without the slightest deviation from the public's expectations," and "We will stand with the people until the day those who tried to cover up the truth with the hand of power pay the price."

In this regard, the People Power Party is demanding that the Democratic Party stop its push to abolish the supplementary investigation rights, arguing that the Jang Yoon-gi case has revealed the dangers of the police's monopoly on investigative powers.
