As the monsoon rain has temporarily paused, hot and humid weather has set in. Seoul is expected to experience its first tropical night of the year tonight, July 10. We are joined by weather forecaster Nam Yu-jin at Yeouido Hangang Park.
It has been humid all day; is it still very hot there?
[Nam Yu-jin, Weather Forecaster]
Seoul remained cloudy throughout the day with intermittent rain, keeping daytime temperatures below 30°C (86°F).
However, the humidity is extremely high, making it feel quite muggy even now.
With a tropical night expected even as the night deepens, many citizens have come here to Hangang Park to escape the heat.
Starting this summer, the Korea Meteorological Administration has introduced a new tropical night advisory system.
A tropical night advisory is issued in areas experiencing heatwave-level temperatures when the nighttime low does not drop below 25°C (77°F) to 27°C (81°F), depending on the region.
Tropical night advisories are currently in effect for parts of the east coast of Gangwon, Chungcheong, and the southern regions.
Heatwave warnings have also been expanded.
As of today, heatwave advisories have been issued for most parts of the country, including the southwestern region of Seoul, while some areas in the Yeongnam region, such as Daegu, have been upgraded to heatwave warnings.
Tomorrow, the daytime temperature in Seoul is expected to reach 33°C (91°F), about 5 degrees higher than today, and Pohang is forecast to climb to 37°C (99°F) the day after tomorrow.
Due to high humidity, the perceived temperature may be even higher than the actual temperature.

The monsoon season is not over yet, is it?
[Nam Yu-jin, Weather Forecaster]
Today, the North Pacific High, which was located to the south, expanded its influence toward the Korean Peninsula, pushing the stationary front up to North Korea.
As a result, the monsoon rain has mostly entered a lull.
However, it is difficult to say that the North Pacific High has fully settled over the country, and it could retreat southward again.
Accordingly, monsoon rain is expected to return across the country around next Wednesday.
Until then, high-pressure systems will be layered in both the upper and lower atmosphere over the Korean Peninsula for the time being, intensifying the heat as if covered by two blankets.
Heatwaves are expected during the day, and tropical nights will persist at night.
Additionally, in the central region, rain clouds will develop like today, bringing occasional showers.
Please be mindful of heat-related illnesses during your outdoor activities this weekend.
