The Korea-U.S. Shipbuilding Cooperation Center, established for the Korea-U.S. shipbuilding project known as MASGA, is set to open this month.
According to government sources on July 10, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy is scheduled to hold an opening ceremony for the center in Washington, D.C., on July 23.
The event is expected to be attended by officials from both governments, as well as representatives from South Korea's three major shipbuilders: HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, Samsung Heavy Industries, and Hanwha Ocean.
It is reported that Kim Hyung-kwan, CEO of HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, and Jung In-sub, President of Hanwha Ocean, are considering attending the ceremony.
Following a meeting between the ministers of the two countries in May, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the U.S. Department of Commerce signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the Korea-U.S. Shipbuilding Partnership Initiative and agreed to establish the center in Washington, D.C., within the year.
With the launch of the center, the MASGA project is expected to gain momentum.
The center will be responsible for building local networks, sharing policy trends, and supporting cooperation between companies from both nations. It also plans to support programs aimed at improving productivity in U.S. shipyards and training the workforce.
The two countries have agreed to allocate 150 billion dollars to shipbuilding cooperation out of a total of 350 billion dollars in investments in the United States.
The U.S. is also exploring cooperation with the Korean shipbuilding industry in the naval vessel sector.
The U.S. Department of Defense and the U.S. Navy recently sent Requests for Information (RFI) to domestic shipbuilders, inquiring about their capabilities in designing and constructing naval vessels, specifically combat ships and oil tankers.
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and Hanwha Ocean responded regarding combat ships, while all three companies, including Samsung Heavy Industries, submitted responses regarding the naval oil tankers.
