Han Byung-do, Acting Leader and Floor Leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, stated that the amendment to the Criminal Procedure Act proposed by the party's internal task force will serve as the "final puzzle piece" for prosecution reform.
During the Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly today (July 10), Acting Leader Han remarked, "Through this bill, we expect the complete abolition of supplementary investigation powers, along with a clearer division of roles and enhanced expertise among investigative agencies."
Han emphasized, "The monopoly of investigative and indictment powers has been the institutional foundation that allowed the prosecution to wield unchecked power for the past 80 years. Under the grand principle of separating investigative and indictment powers, the Democratic Party has pursued prosecution reform through sufficient internal party discussions and social deliberation."
However, he added, "We are also aware of the concerns raised in some quarters," and promised, "We will prepare robust supplementary measures during the review process in the Legislation and Judiciary Committee."
Regarding the special counsel bill he proposed the previous day concerning the ballot shortage incident during the June 3 local elections, Acting Leader Han stressed, "We will uncover the truth behind the National Election Commission's poor election management."
He further urged, "The People Power Party is using the public's right to vote as a tool for political strife by insisting on the opposition party's exclusive recommendation for the special counsel. If they are genuinely concerned about democracy and the public's right to vote, they should join us in the fair selection of a special counsel and the reform of the National Election Commission."
