Prime Minister Han Seong-suk visited several religious leaders today (July 8) to pay her respects upon taking office.
On the afternoon of July 8, Prime Minister Han visited Jogyesa Temple in Jongno-gu to meet with Ven. Jinwoo, President of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism.
"The first task the President entrusted me with was to pursue politics that saves lives," Prime Minister Han said. "He told me that we must examine the various types of (death) factors and research diverse policies."
She continued, "As economic growth occurred so rapidly, competition has intensified, and as a result, people have nowhere to turn for comfort. It is a very worrying situation," pointing out that "society is heading toward extremes, with people becoming overly hostile toward one another."
Prime Minister Han stated that she had received briefings from relevant ministries, including the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the National Police Agency, regarding pending issues such as lonely deaths. "I would like to hear your thoughts on how we can share these burdens and overcome these problems, and seek your guidance in setting our direction," she said.
In response, Ven. Jinwoo suggested, "While the state provides support for physical illnesses, psychological trauma and stress are not well reflected in welfare policies. I hope these can be practically incorporated at the policy level."

Prime Minister Han then visited the Catholic Diocese of Suwon to meet with Bishop Matthias Ri Iong-hoon.
During this meeting, she remarked, "Because there is so much conflict in society, people are more focused on asserting their own views rather than engaging in dialogue or discussion. The Catholic Church has played a significant role in this regard, and I hope you will continue to work with us."
She also promised that the government would provide full support for the World Youth Day to be held in Seoul next year, noting that "a great number of people will be attending."
