President Lee Jae-myung, who is visiting Ankara, Türkiye, to attend the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit, held a summit with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
President Lee met with the Ukrainian president in Ankara on July 8 (local time).
During the 43-minute meeting, the two leaders are believed to have focused their discussions on the situation regarding the Russia-Ukraine war, regional peace, and measures for reconstruction.
Previously, President Lee expressed his hope for an early end to the war in Ukraine and the establishment of a peace regime during a small-group meeting held yesterday (July 7) with the NATO Secretary General and representatives of the IP4 countries (the Indo-Pacific partners: South Korea, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand).
The Presidential Office stated that President Lee emphasized that illegal acts must not be justified during the process of ending the war in Ukraine and stressed that instability in Europe caused by the war must not spread to Northeast Asia.
It is expected that both sides focused their discussions on ways to bring an early end to the Russia-Ukraine war and restore peace and stability in the region.
Wi Sung-lac, Director of the National Security Office, explained the achievements of this NATO summit during a briefing at the Korea Press Center in Ankara, Türkiye, stating, "Through our pledge of 100 million dollars in comprehensive support for Ukraine, we have demonstrated our commitment to contributing to international peace and security through action."
Director Wi added significance to the move, saying, "We have consistently supported Ukraine through various channels, including humanitarian aid, and this is an extension of our contributions."
