Celebrations in Buenos Aires, Argentina, turned violent after the national team defeated Egypt to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, dpa reported on July 8 (KST).
Nineteen people were arrested in Buenos Aires, and five police officers were injured during the unrest.
Two of the injured officers suffered broken bones.
Following the match, thousands of fans gathered at the Obelisk in the city center to celebrate the victory.
However, the atmosphere turned rowdy as the night progressed.
A police official stated, "The trouble began when fans started throwing objects at the officers on the scene."
Clashes broke out between fans and police, and officers used rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.
The disturbances were not limited to the capital, Buenos Aires.
Various incidents of violence, both large and small, were reported in several cities, including Mar del Plata, Cordoba, and Rafaela.
The fans were sent into a frenzy by the match, in which Argentina overcame a 0-2 deficit to win 3-2, thanks to a stellar performance by Lionel Messi, who recorded one goal and one assist in the final stages of the second half.
Argentina is set to face Switzerland in the quarterfinals at Kansas City Stadium in the United States on July 12 at 10:00 a.m. (KST).
