Celebrations in Buenos Aires, Argentina, turned violent after the national team defeated Egypt to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, DPA reported on July 8 (KST).

Nineteen people were arrested in Buenos Aires, and five police officers were injured during the events.

Two of the injured officers suffered broken bones.

Following the match, thousands of fans gathered at the Obelisco de Buenos Aires in the city center to celebrate.

However, the atmosphere turned rowdy as the night progressed.

A police official stated, "The trouble began when fans started throwing objects at the officers on the scene."

Clashes erupted between fans and police, leading officers to fire rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.

The unrest was not limited to the capital, Buenos Aires.

Various incidents of violence were reported in several other cities, including Mar del Plata, Cordoba, and Rafaela.

Fans were sent into a frenzy by the match, in which Argentina overcame a 0-2 deficit to win 3-2, thanks to a stellar performance by Lionel Messi, who recorded one goal and one assist in the final minutes of the second half.

Argentina is set to face Switzerland in the quarterfinals at Kansas City Stadium in the United States at 10:00 a.m. on July 12 (KST).
