SBS has confirmed that the prosecution has secured the cable ties that went missing from the vehicle used by Jang Yoon-gi, the perpetrator of the Gwangju high school girl murder case, a discovery that had previously sparked controversy over the destruction of evidence.
The Gwangju District Prosecutors' Office searched the residence of Jang's father, a police inspector surnamed Jang currently serving in the Gwangju area, yesterday (July 7) and seized the cable ties in question.
The cable ties are key pieces of evidence suspected to be the tools Jang intended to use to kidnap and bind the victim. The investigation team at the Gwangju Gwangsan Police Station, which was handling the case, had identified the items during an emergency search of Jang's vehicle on May 5 but failed to secure them at the time.
The prosecution plans to investigate whether there was any collusion between Inspector Jang and the initial police investigation team regarding how the cable ties disappeared from Jang Yoon-gi's vehicle.
