The United States has revoked sanctions waivers for Iranian oil in response to attacks on oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz.

According to Reuters on July 7 (local time), a U.S. administration official announced the cancellation of the general license previously granted for the sale of Iranian oil.

The U.S. Department of the Treasury had issued a 60-day temporary general license on June 22, which allowed for the production, delivery, and sale of Iranian oil.

The sanctions waiver was intended to cover the 60-day period during which the U.S. and Iran were to conduct follow-up negotiations following the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU).

Prior to this, three oil tankers were attacked in the Strait of Hormuz starting on the night of July 6.

The U.S. and Iran also engaged in a military standoff late last month, triggered by Iranian attacks on oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz.
