Powerful tornadoes and torrential rain brought by Typhoon Maysak have caused widespread damage across various parts of China. More than 55,000 people have been displaced by rapidly rising floodwaters, and reports of casualties continue to emerge.

Beijing correspondent Han Sang-woo reports.

A massive tornado, accompanied by lightning streaking across the sky, swallows the city while unleashing wind and rain.

Street vendor stalls were swept away entirely by the wind, and living room windows were ripped out along with their frames.

"Everything was blown away. The windows were gone, and even the refrigerator door was blown off," a witness said.

Starting around 7:00 p.m. on July 6 (local time), a powerful tornado struck the eastern part of Hubei Province for approximately four hours.

With tornadoes hitting multiple locations simultaneously, 11 people have been confirmed dead, one is missing, and 331 have been injured so far.

Twenty-two houses collapsed, and more than 4,800 others were damaged.

On the same day, massive flooding occurred in Nanning, Guangxi, in southern China.

Following three days of torrential rain caused by Typhoon Maysak, reservoirs overflowed and embankments collapsed, turning the surrounding villages into a sea of water.

So far, four people have died and eight are missing.

The number of displaced people has reached over 55,000.

While 48,000 people were evacuated before the villages were submerged, rescue operations are still underway, meaning the death toll could rise further.

This morning (July 7), a landslide occurred in Longnan, Gansu Province, in northwestern China, burying 33 people.

The China Fire and Rescue Service has been conducting search and rescue operations and has rescued 21 people so far, but five of them have ultimately died.

As large-scale natural disasters occur simultaneously, President Xi Jinping has ordered the strengthening of relief and rescue efforts and the active implementation of disaster prevention inspections across China.

With floods, tornadoes, and landslides already causing havoc, a super-strong typhoon, Bavi, is heading toward southeastern China, raising concerns about even greater damage.
