Gwangju Jeil High School has decided to call for leniency regarding the disciplinary action taken against the Baejae High School baseball team for using a cheer chant that mocked the May 18 Democratization Movement.
Gwangju Jeil High School is set to announce today, with the principal, the president of the alumni association, and the baseball team manager in attendance, that the six-month suspension imposed on the Baejae High School baseball players is too severe and will request a more lenient decision.
It is reported that they plan to draft and submit a petition one day before the deadline for filing an appeal with the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee's Sports Fair Committee.
Yesterday, about 80 people, including the manager and players of the Baejae High School baseball team, visited Gwangju to apologize, and the players, manager, and teachers of Gwangju Jeil High School accepted their apology.
Students from both Gwangju Jeil High School and Baejae High School also visited the May 18th National Cemetery to pay their respects to the victims of the movement.
Previously, following the controversy over the "Starbucks" cheer chant, the Baejae High School baseball team was handed a six-month suspension and forfeited the remaining games of the 81st Blue Dragon National High School Baseball Championship.
While some argue that accountability for the inappropriate behavior is necessary, others have expressed the opinion that imposing such heavy disciplinary action on the entire baseball team is excessive, considering the students' futures.
The deadline for Baejae High School to file for a retrial is tomorrow.
