Chung Mong-gyu, who has led the Korea Football Association (KFA) for over 13 years, submitted his resignation today (July 6) and stepped down from his post.
According to the KFA, Chung submitted his resignation after presiding over his final executive meeting at the Korea Football Center in Cheonan today.
Chung, who had previously signaled his intention to step down following the North and Central America World Cup back in May, was initially expected to resign after the conclusion of the tournament. However, it is understood that he moved up the date of his resignation to address the recent controversies surrounding South Korean football and to normalize the organization.
The KFA is expected to transition to a system where one of the vice presidents serves as acting president while preparations for the next presidential election get underway.
