Chung Mong-gyu, who has led the Korea Football Association (KFA), has stepped down from his position after 13 years and five months.
The KFA announced today that President Chung submitted his resignation this morning (July 6) after presiding over his final executive meeting at the Korea Football Center in Cheonan, which was attended by vice presidents and board members.
With this, Chung, who served four consecutive terms since taking office as the 52nd president in January 2013, has officially stepped down.
Initially, it was expected that Chung would resign after the conclusion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
However, it is understood that he moved up the timing of his resignation to address the recent controversies surrounding the KFA and to normalize the organization.
In accordance with Article 23 of the Articles of Association, the KFA will transition to a system where one of the vice presidents, approved by the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee, will serve as acting president.
Furthermore, the KFA plans to prepare for the next presidential election in a fair and seamless manner under the leadership of the acting president.
In his farewell message, Chung stated, "I have run forward looking only toward the development and glory of South Korean football, but at times, I have also caused deep disappointment." He added, "All the glory and achievements belong to the players and the fans, while all the shortcomings and faults are entirely my responsibility."
He continued, "I will now step down from the presidency and return as a passionate football fan to cheer for South Korean football. I am confident that South Korean football, as it has always done, will overcome numerous trials and soar high once again."
