Students from the Paejae High School baseball team in Seoul, who faced criticism for shouting cheering slogans mocking the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement during a game against Gwangju Jeil High School, are visiting Gwangju today (July 6) to offer an apology.
All 36 student athletes from the Paejae High School baseball team, along with about 80 parents and teachers, are scheduled to visit Gwangju Jeil High School at 3:00 p.m. today to express their apologies.
The student athletes from both schools will subsequently pay a joint tribute at the May 18th National Cemetery.
The incident was sparked on June 29 during the Blue Dragon Flag tournament, when some Paejae High School players shouted "Let's go to Starbucks" and "Tank Day" toward the Gwangju Jeil High School dugout.
Paejae High School has decided to discipline the two students who led the chants, and the Korea Baseball Softball Association has imposed a six-month suspension from competition on Paejae High School and declared a forfeit for their remaining games.
