A driver has died after his vehicle plunged into the sea while he was attempting to evade a drunk driving crackdown.

According to police on Saturday, July 4, a vehicle driven by a man in his 40s, identified as A, fell into the water at a national security pier in Dal-dong, Mokpo, South Jeolla Province, at approximately 8:30 p.m. on Friday, July 3.

A was rescued in a state of cardiac arrest and transported to a hospital, but he was pronounced dead.

Just before the accident, A had refused to comply with a police DUI checkpoint and fled the scene.

Despite police attempts to block his path, A continued his escape, eventually crashing through a security fence and driving into the pier area, where the accident occurred.

The police and the Korea Coast Guard are currently investigating the exact circumstances of the accident and the cause of A's death.
