An active-duty U.S. Air Force major was arrested after calling for the impeachment of President Donald Trump on the steps of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.

According to reports from CNN and the military news outlet Military Times on July 2 (local time), Major Jason Watson was arrested by Capitol Police after staging a one-man protest on the Capitol steps following a speech at a press conference hosted by the anti-Trump group Removal Coalition the previous day.

At the time, Major Watson was wearing his military uniform and identified himself as an active-duty officer during his speech.

In his remarks, he argued that President Trump’s orders for military action against foreign nations, including Venezuela and Iran, were illegal, and asserted that both President Trump and Vice President JD Vance should be impeached and removed from office.

He also cited the large-scale deportation operation of undocumented immigrants and the deaths of two Americans shot by immigration agents in Minneapolis, Minnesota, as examples of illegal actions by the Trump administration.

The Capitol Police, confirming the arrest, stated that protesters are not permitted to demonstrate on the Capitol steps without being accompanied by a member of Congress. They added that he was arrested on charges including crowding, obstructing, or incommoding, after refusing a lawful order to cease the protest.

Major Watson was initially accompanied by Representative Al Green (Democrat, Texas), but was arrested by Capitol Police shortly after the congressman departed.

Representative Green is a prominent anti-Trump figure within the opposition party, known for introducing articles of impeachment against President Trump and for being escorted out after shouting during the President's joint address to Congress.

Military Times reported that Major Watson is the first active-duty officer to publicly demand the impeachment of President Trump and Vice President Vance, as well as their removal from office following a conviction in the Senate.
