▲ Mexico players celebrate after Raul Jimenez scores an additional goal
Mexico has broken a 40-year curse in FIFA World Cup knockout matches, securing a spot in the Round of 16. In the Round of 32 match of the 2026 North and Central America World Cup held today at the Mexico City Stadium, Mexico defeated Ecuador 2-0, fueled by the performance of Julian Quinones, who recorded one goal and one assist, and Raul Jimenez, who scored an additional goal.
The playmaking and game management of 17-year-old prodigy Gilberto Mora, along with the saves by goalkeeper Raul Rangel, also played a significant role in Mexico's victory.
With this win, Mexico has reached the World Cup Round of 16 for the first time in eight years, since the 2018 Russia tournament.
At the time, with 32 countries participating, teams advanced directly to the Round of 16 after passing the group stage.
Most importantly, this marks Mexico's first victory in a World Cup knockout match since the 1986 tournament held on home soil, where they achieved their best-ever finish by reaching the quarterfinals.
The 2-0 victory over Bulgaria in the Round of 16 forty years ago was the only win Mexico had recorded in its previous 10 World Cup knockout matches.
Although Mexico reached the Round of 16 for seven consecutive tournaments from the 1994 U.S. event to the 2018 Russia event, they were unable to advance further.
They failed to qualify for the 1990 Italy tournament and were eliminated in the group stage at the 2022 Qatar tournament.
Mexico, which topped Group A with three wins (9 points, 6 goals scored, zero conceded) in the group stage of this co-hosted tournament—including a 1-0 victory over South Korea—continued their streak of clean sheets by completely shutting down Ecuador.
Ecuador finished third in Group E during the group stage with 1 win, 1 draw, and 1 loss (4 points), behind Germany and Ivory Coast, and joined the Round of 32 as the fourth-best third-placed team among all groups.
Despite reaching the World Cup knockout stage for the first time in 20 years since the 2006 Germany tournament, they were unable to overcome Mexico and were eliminated.
Mexico will face the winner of the England vs. DR Congo match on the 6th at the same venue for a spot in the quarterfinals.
Mexico will have enjoyed the full advantage of being the host nation, having played four out of their five matches leading up to the Round of 16 at the Mexico City Stadium, with the only exception being their Group A second match against South Korea held at the Guadalajara Stadium.
In today's match, which started one hour later than scheduled due to bad weather and the risk of lightning near the stadium, Mexico pushed aggressively from the beginning.
In the 7th minute, Luis Romo broke into the right side of the penalty area to receive a pass from Mora and sent in a cross, which Jimenez met with a header, but the ball was misdirected and went wide.
In the 15th minute, a right-footed curling shot by Mora from the left side of the penalty area narrowly missed the goalpost.

Ecuador faced misfortune in the 18th minute when John Yeboah, after a one-on-one dribble, fired a left-footed shot from the left side of the penalty area that hit the goalpost.
Mexico, having dodged a bullet, took the lead in the 22nd minute. Roberto Alvarado sent a ball from the left side of his own half into the space behind the opposing defense. Quinones chased it down, bypassed a defender on the left side of the penalty area, and fired a right-footed shot into the net.
This was the third goal of the tournament for Quinones, who plays for Al-Qadsiah and was the top scorer in the 2025-2026 Saudi Pro League with 33 goals.
Buoyed by the momentum, Mexico extended their lead in the 31st minute. Jimenez intercepted a cleared ball, penetrated the dense defense, passed to Quinones, received it back, and scored an additional goal with a right-footed shot from the center of the penalty area.
In the 40th minute, Ecuador's Yeboah attempted a left-footed curling shot from the right side of the penalty box, but it was blocked by goalkeeper Rangel, and Ecuador finished the first half unable to overcome the deficit.
In the second half, Mexico strengthened their defense to absorb Ecuador's offensive while looking for additional goals through quick transitions.
In the 22nd minute of the second half, Cesar Montes connected with a dangerous header from a corner kick delivered by Alvarado from the left, but Ecuador goalkeeper Hernan Galindez managed to punch it away.
Ecuador felt a sense of regret in the 29th minute of the second half when Kevin Rodriguez trapped a ball played into the space behind the defense with his chest, but his attempt to push it in with his right foot past the rushing goalkeeper went wide of the post.
In the 40th minute of the second half, a right-footed mid-range shot by Moises Caicedo missed the target, and Ecuador ultimately failed to breach the Mexican goal, which has yet to be opened in this tournament.
Furthermore, in second-half stoppage time, defender Piero Hincapie was seen covering his mouth while saying something during a confrontation with Santiago Jimenez. He was shown a red card and sent off in accordance with a rule applied for the first time in this tournament.
This is the second time in this tournament that a player has been sent off for covering their mouth, following Paraguay midfielder Miguel Almiron during the Group D second match against Turkey on the 20th of last month.
